STEM DEPARTMENT

Here are the standards on which your child is working in 7th Grade STEM.

  • 7th Grade STEM students design, sketch, build and test 3D computer and physical prototype models to solve real life problems.

  • Scrolling photos show: ankle and foot - Foot Orthosis, ultimate chair, and a school locker organizer.

Here is what your child has been working on in 8th grade STEM:

Standards for Automation and Robotics (STEM8) first quarter.

Project Lead the Way has used ABET criteria (1) through (11) as a guiding principle throughout the development of PLTW curriculum for Automation and Robotics.

  1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering

  2. an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data

  3. an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability

  4. an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams

  5. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems

  6. an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility

  7. an ability to communicate effectively

  8. the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context

  9. a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning

  10. a knowledge of contemporary issues

  11. an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

This quarter, students learn the importance of good communication when working on a team. They learn good building and designing techniques and apply them as they build and learn about mechanisms. Finally, they apply their knowledge to design and build machines to solve problems given certain constraints.

Mr. Poehner took some members of his seventh grade STEM class to Thyssenkrupp Bilstein. During this visit, students were shown engineering activities that result in sustainable contribution towards the ongoing improvement of structural designs and systems in the automotive industry. Students saw first hand the skills and decisions that go into this growing industry.
