Veteran's Day picture collage

On Veteran's Day our students and staff honored veterans in a variety of ways including special activities to teach our students about the importance of this day.  These activities included:

  • Hosting a Veterans Appreciation Breakfast at Edgewood Elementary School for veterans and active military members from our community.  Over 120 individuals attended this event. Our EHS Marching Cougars along with our 5th Grade Choir entertained our guests with patriotic music. In addition, a few students read essays to the crowd on what Veteran's Day mean to them. Then, we honored our guests in our Parade of Heroes.  It was an incredible experience for everyone as American flags were waved and students chanted USA as our veterans and active military walked the halls.
  • From Kindergarten to 5th Grade, our Seven Mile Elementary students learned about the importance of Veteran's Day. Some of our youngest Cougars were taught a poem to understand what today is all about and spent time drawing pictures of what they are thankful for.  In other classes, students read a booklet called, Veteran's Day along with completing an activity sheet to understand the "who, when, why and how" of this holiday. Our 4th Graders read "Meet a Soldier" article and learned about the different branches of the military.  Other students watched a video from the History Channel and then answered questions on why we celebrate this holiday and discussed what they are thankful for as a citizen in America because of our veterans.
  • At Edgewood Middle School, our students wrote letters to active military and veterans. Nearly 200 letters were written that will be sent to Operation Gratitude who will distribute these letters to those who have served and are serving our country.
  • In between each class at Edgewood High School, staff members who served in the military were honored.  Cadets from our JROTC read a short bio of these men and women who are now educators and staff members in our high school.  It was a wonderful way to make our students aware of who have served our country and to thank them for their sacrifice and duty.
