    The Edgewood Board of Education is a five-member board whose members are elected to represent the community to insure appropriate organizational performance within the school district.

    The board appoints a superintendent and treasurer of schools and works closely with these individuals to drive the mission, goals and objectives of Edgewood City Schools.

    Some of the duties and responsibilities of the board are the following:

    • Adopt board policies as needed and required to govern the district.
    • Through the recommendation of the superintendent approve employment of staff, renewal, non-renewal and termination of staff, salary schedules, course of study, curriculum, selection of textbooks, and other matters which impact our schools.
    • Adoption of annual appropriation measures.
    • Exercise its taxing power to provide funds for the operation of the district.
    • Play a key role in adopting and driving the districts strategic plan.

    Board members are elected at large to serve a four-year term. Each member is elected on staggering terms. The current board make-up is three members on one term, and two on another. Officers are elected by their fellow board members and serve one-year terms. There are no term limits for board members.

    Current Board Members

    Amy Ashcraft, President
    A Lifetime resident of the district Mrs. Ashcraft is 1991 graduate of Edgewood High School. Amy continued her education at Ohio University for two years, and then transferred to the University of Cincinnati to graduating there in 1995 with a BS in Criminal Justice and a minor in Sociology and Women's Studies.

    Before entering law school she worked as security guard for a year at AK Steel then on to Law School at Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.

    Married to Matt Ashcraft, a 1991 graduate of Edgewood, the Ashcraft's have twin girls, Brooklyn and Emily, and twin boys, Coulter and Cory.

    In 2007 Mrs. Ashcraft opened a law office in Trenton. Her firm specializes in Juvenile Law with a focus on Abuse, Neglect and Dependency, Juvenile Delinquency, Truancy, and Child Support. She also is a Guardian ad Litem for children involved in court cases with their parents, and works with in Bankruptcy, Appeals, Probate Law.

    President of the Edgewood Elementary PTO for the last 4 years, she currently coaches Soccer in the Trenton FOOTS league.

    Amy comments, "I have a strong passion for the district and the children in our community. I am honored to be elected to the Board and hope to help in Edgewood's quest to continue excellence."

    Jim Miller, Vice President
    Jim Miller is a 1995 graduate of Edgewood High School. As a High School Senior, he started taking firefighting classes with D. Russell Lee Vocational School. After graduating he joined the Wayne Township Fire Department and Life Squad, where he was named Chairman of the Board from 1999 – 2006. As a firefighter, Jim went to New York City to volunteer in search and rescue efforts after the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

    Jim Wirtley
    A 1983 graduate of Edgewood, Jim first took office in January 2002 and lives in Trenton with his wife Karen and children Lauryn, Madalyn, Kaitlyn and Ryan. Jim became Vice-President in 2004 and later was elected Board President in 2010.

    Jim has also been active in the Edgewood Community as a coach for the Edgewood Youth Baseball Association and the Trenton F.O.O.T.S. soccer association. Jim earned a BS in Mathematical Sciences and a Masters of Applied Statistics from The Ohio State University. Jim is currently Manager, Benefit Operations for NewPage Corporation in Dayton.

    David Osborne
    A 37-year resident of the district, Mr. Osborne is in his second term on the board. Dave and his wife Susie have two children, Jonathan age 30, a graduate of Edgewood High School and Miami University, and Robbie age 20, also a graduate of Edgewood and currently a sophomore at Miami University. He has been involved in youth sport programs and has volunteered in other capacities for the district throughout his life. Mr. Osborne is the owner of a local trucking company which he has owned for 33 years. He looks forward to making a positive contribution to the overall quality of Edgewood.

    Richard Hurchanik
    Mr. Richard Hurchanik is currently serving his first term on the Board of Education. A resident of the Village of Seven Mile where he serves on village council, Richard earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio University in 1967 and a Masters of Business Administration from Columbus College in Georgia in 1979. He received his Juris Doctor-from the University of Cincinnati Law School in 1982 using the GI Bill, and is currently practicing in his law firm in Hamilton, Ohio.

    Mr. Hurchanik spent 11 years in active duty as an Airborne Ranger Infantryman in the Army. He commanded four infantry companies, two of which were in combat in Vietnam. He received the Combat Infantryman's Badge, three Bronze Stars, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and an Air Medal award in that war. As a member of the 478 Engineer Battalion Reserves of Ft. Thomas, Kentucky he was instrumental in helping with the installation of the all weather track at Hamilton High School. Hamilton High School gave him a commemorative plague and picture for his participation.

    Richard was a classroom instructor at Fort Benning, and was a Ranger instructor for the Army Rangers. He also has taught Business Law at Miami University. He was an instructor and later a principal in the Army Command and General Staff Offices course.

    A lifetime member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW), he has held various post positions and was an all state Post Commander for the Hamilton VFW Post 7670 in Overpeck.
