From the Superintendent
Six years ago we began a process to develop a “road map”
for the District called a Strategic Plan. This Strategic Plan,
written and adopted some five years ago, has helped us
accomplish many things. Some of the highlights of these
accomplishments are:
-
We organized the District strategically, including instruction
and support services to concentrate all efforts
and resources toward student success. Th is strategy
played a major role in Edgewood being one of the 43
districts to increase five indicators on the State Report
Card, making us an “Effective” school district.
-
We created a communication network with the public,
resulting in an extremely informative web site, numerous
entertaining publications and significant uses of
electronic media.
-
We developed a grant writing program that has resulted
in over one million dollars in competitive grants, which
otherwise would not have happened or would have
come from general fund dollars. These grants have provided
books, computers, instructional supplies, exercise
and playground equipment, held trips, and professional
development for our employees.
-
We established a Pre-Kindergarten Program for
the Edgewood Community.
-
We have provided curriculum to meet the
needs of all students, which includes
expanded course offerings of honors and
A/P classes at the high school.
-
We have implemented an aggressive
recruiting program to attract high
quality teachers. In addition, we
created a mentor program for
entry year teachers.
The Board is to be commended for their vision
shown by commissioning the first plan and continuing to support the philosophy and development of Strategic Planning. We are thankful the Board has given us full support in the work and adoption of this second plan.
The planning began with an initial three-day session. A steering committee made up of twenty-five community members, students, civic leaders, school board members,
administrators, guidance counselors, teachers and classified employees developed a Mission Statement, a set of beliefs, parameters, objectives and strategies. Action teams
were then formed, who studied the plan and developed “action plans” to accomplish these strategies. The various teams worked several months in the development of their
plans. For all involved, the work was intense and was literally a “labor of love” because everyone associated with the plan did so out of dedication to the students of Edgewood and the community.
We look forward to seeing the progress and growth that
we experience as a result of this new Strategic Plan. As Edgewood continues to grow, we
know that this plan will help us develop a process for using our growth to become even better in providing an education for all students. The essence of Edgewood City Schools' belief of the is that “…all children can and want to learn.”
Our Mission: The mission of the Edgewood City School Community is to inspire
each student to attain personal fulfillment through intellectual, emotional
and social growth by providing:
