Curriculum and Staff Development
During the past school year the Edgewood curriculum department has focused on K-12 strident improvement in the areas of language arts and math. The district provided teachers with many opportunities to learn more about effective instructional strategies. Staff members attended inservice sessions in the district, visited model schools in the local vicinity, traveled to seminars and workshops outside the district and attended focused book discussions.
District teachers examined and studied educational options which will help to ensure that all students have a fundamental literacy foundation by grade one. A new “kinderplus” program will begin in the fall 2002. This program will provide all day instruction for kindergarten students who qualify through a rigorous testing procedure.
The Edgewood District, in conjunction with the Edgewood Teachers Association, developed a mentoring program for first year teachers. The purpose of the mentoring program is to give new teachers support during their first year of teaching. Approximately twenty-three teachers attended PathWise training and have completed the mentor teacher course. Next year the mentoring program will be expanded through the addition of Ohio First training for Edgewood mentors.
The K-8 Summer School enrollment increased from sixty-three in 2001 to a total of two hundred and forty students in 2002. Summer School for students K-5 was free along with free transportation and breakfast. The Fourth Grade Proficiency test was also offered during Summer School.
College Preparatory Program
Students interested in going on to college are assisted by the guidance counselors in choosing the correct courses to prepare them for college, selecting the college that best suits their needs, and obtaining financial aid. Edgewood High School is accredited by the North Central Association of Secondary Schools, which means it meets the college preparatory standards required for our students to go on to a college education program.
Career Education
Career Education is an integral part of the total K-12 curriculum and seeks to infuse language arts and social studies to living and working. The world of work is changing daily and thinking skills and problem solving skills are taught as employability skills needed for the 21st century. Many other career related activities take place, such as interest inventories, career days for the eighth graders and high schools students, and CareerScope interest/ability survey given to all E.H.S. students. The high school seniors are required to have a career passport to show their skills in relation to work or further education and to showcase their career portfolio.
Vocational Program
Students who are junior and seniors may choose to attend D. Russell Lee Career Center for many different vocational program offerings to prepare them for jobs or further training after high school. Vocational School opportunities are available at Edgewood High School in Business Education. Occupational Work Experience, and Distributive Education. The Occupational Work Adjustment Program is available to students in the eighth grade.
